Learning with my pregnant dog…….Kennel Club Registration

Dear friends,

We all know that it doesn’t matter if our puppies are or are not registered, we will love them anyway. But if you plan to have a registered litter or to start breeding you should consider some details prior to have your dog pregnant. Some of them are:
  •  Both parents of your litter should have their pedigree recognized in the country where the litter will be born
  • None of them should have any observation stamped on their pedigree that should prevent them from breeding (such as one testicule, or any other characteristic that could be transferred genetically and that is not approved)
  • In case the father and/or mother is from a different country than the one where the litter will be born and they have their pedigree emitted by their country, you should ask in the Kennel Club of their original country the Export Pedigree. With this document you can go to the Kennel Club in your country (where the litter will be born) and have them registered, so your litter will be recognized and will have their pedigree also.
  • You should check Kennel Club Rules for breeding which includes, but are not limited to, age of parents (vary from male to female, from small to large breed, etc), how many litters your female dog may have without resting (for instance here in Chile you may have your dog pregnant two time with no rest, then you should have a break for one cycle to start breeding again)
  • If you want to breed and want to have your litter registered, you should go to the Kennel Club and register a Kennel in your name. This process takes lots of time (for instance it may take around 06 to 12 months) as it goes to FCI (Federation Cynologique Internationale) in Belgium for name’s approval. Some countries allow you to have a first litter with no kennel registered while others require you to submit the names (normally you should give them three options) and will allow first litter to be temporarily registered with your first option. In case your kennel name is not approved, you will be allowed to change the pedigree of your litter also.
  • Pedigrees normally clearly identify champions dogs. You may also look for new titles for ancestors of your dogs in the web, as the champion titles stamped in your pedigree are those recognized by the country where it was issued, but the ancestors of your dogs may have titles in other countries, especially if they are imported dogs.
More information can be gotten directly in the Kennel Club of your country or in the FCI site. Some good links are:
